Concerned resident of Shinfield Meadows, Edward Shaw has launched a petition calling on Wokingham Borough Council to take urgent action to tackle speeding vehicles in the area. The campaign, which has quickly gained momentum, seeks to make local roads safer for families, dog walkers, and schoolchildren who use them daily.
The grassroots initiative was sparked by growing fears over drivers regularly exceeding speed limits along key residential roads such as Bolton Drive and Appleton Way. Campaigner Edward Shaw says "the lack of traffic calming measures is putting lives at risk".
“We’re simply asking for safer streets,” said another resident of the estate, “There have been far too many near misses. It shouldn’t take a serious accident for action to be taken.”
The petition, launched online on Wokingham Borough Councils E-Petition website, is already gathering strong support from across the community. Residents are urging the Council to introduce speed-reducing measures such as speed bumps, clearer signage, and pedestrian crossings—particularly near the local school and green spaces where families often walk.
Many locals have shared stories of close calls while crossing roads or walking along narrow pavements.
“We’re not being unreasonable,” said one long-time resident. “We just want the roads to reflect the fact that this is a growing residential area—not a racetrack.”
The Shinfield Meadows development has seen significant population growth in recent years, with more families and pedestrians using roads that were once quieter. Residents say that infrastructure and road safety measures have not kept pace with the expansion.
The petition will be submitted to Wokingham Borough Council once the end date has passed. Campaigner Edward Shaw hope the efforts will lead to formal traffic assessments and the implementation of long-term solutions to improve safety for all road users.
In the meantime, Edward Shaw is encouraging more residents to sign and share the petition, both to demonstrate community support and to ensure that their concerns are heard.
