A group of travellers have moved onto a patch of land just off Beke Avenue in Shinfield, opposite The Chapters, sparking mixed reactions from local residents and prompting a response from local authorities.

At least six two caravans were spotted arriving on the site. The land, believed to be privately owned but currently unused, sits near residential properties and green space, leading to unease among some neighbours.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “They arrived very quickly and set up overnight. We’re not sure how long they intend to stay. People are understandably concerned about the impact on the area, but we also want to see the situation handled fairly and respectfully, I believe they are the same travellers that came from Cutbush Lane".

Local councillors have confirmed they are aware of the situation. In a brief statement, a spokesperson for Wokingham Borough Council said: “We are currently assessing the circumstances and working with relevant agencies, including Thames Valley Police and the landowner, to determine appropriate next steps.”

Police have visited the site but say no criminal activity has been reported so far. They added that their role is to ensure public safety and prevent any potential disorder, rather than to carry out evictions, which fall under the jurisdiction of the landowner and the local authority.

Travellers' groups have long campaigned for more legal stopping places and better support, arguing that unauthorised encampments often occur due to a lack of available sites. One local advocate told Shinfield News: “These families have nowhere else to go. This is not about causing trouble – it’s about finding somewhere to live in peace.”

The council has not yet issued an eviction notice but confirmed that steps would be taken in accordance with legal procedures if the landowners request action.

Meanwhile, residents are being encouraged to remain calm and report any specific concerns to the council or police rather than approaching the encampment directly.
